Do you also think a girl is to
be blamed if she is raped?

Early morning while taking a sip on my coffee mug I took the newspaper & I saw a news article on another Delhi rape case. Well, now it’s nothing new and there lies the main tragedy that it’s not new and it almost became an everyday issue. Almost every day we see & hear such news. But the turmoil of thoughts stirred me within in the afternoon which drived me to write this article.
It was only in the afternoon when I have opened my facebook account like my regular routine (almost every 5mins job :p) I saw another news article on rape posted which says a girl who went to disc was gang raped while returning home at about 11pm in the night by some guys who were in the same disc who followed her later while returning. The thing that disturbed me was few comments on the post by some ‘gentlemen’ and to my surprise by few ‘ladies’ too according to whom it was the mistake of that girl to go to the disc at night, while few others have said that rapes are invited by the girls who wear exposive dresses to draw all male attention. And the most dramatic statement was.. ‘tali ek haath se nahi bajjti hai’ (which means ‘one hand alone cannot make a clap’ & perhaps it means ‘it takes two to make a quarrel’).
Well, my first question to him and also to that segment of the society who thinks the similar way is that is rape some kind of ‘Tali’??? Open the newspaper, switch on to the TV news channels or look around you will also see cases where 2 months old girls are being raped too. Which hand did they put forward for that ‘tali’??? What special dress they wore or what special gestures they gave that invited the rapist? Women in veils are also being raped. I hope atleast they didn’t invite rapist by their clothing.  A woman dresses for herself for her different purposes. Yes, clothing has many different roles to play but in no way one should take it as an invitation for rape.
Talking about somebody’s dressing and going to disc at night, I believe it’s completely one’s personal choice. I am neither supporting to wear exposive dresses nor do I am supporting to go to disc or bar at night or day but then there is something called as ‘right to freedom’ and I think a girl has every right to choose her own dressing and outing timings without giving a second thought just like any other guy of my mother India. Don’t you think she have every right to go out freely whenever she wish without worrying about the several pairs of lusty eyes or the dirty minds? Do you think a girl is to be blamed if she is raped?

We always proudly say that we are the people of 21st century but unfortunately we are still in such an age where putting female at fault is so in trend. From their childhood we teach the children about the gender differences and the different gender roles but unfortunately we keep the total giant share of rules & restrictions for the girls only. We achieved independence long back but till date the female section of our society is struggling to achieve it in true sense.

The gender roles taught at childhood play a great role as we grow up. It adds value and moral to our self-concept & at the same time influences our reaction towards the surrounding environment. As we all know early childhood is best time to mold or shape a person I think the best education to respect the women and not to see them as sex object should also be done at this age.
Marching with candles on hand at night after a girl has already become a victim or by positing few comments by abusing or cursing the rapist on social networking sites won’t help the society in anyway but I think the right education at the right time to the youngsters may help. The day we will STOP overrating the male dominating society & underrating the female value, half of our task will be done. I think it’s already time for us to change the mindset and to teach our youngsters not to rape instead of teaching a girl not to be raped by asking her to dress in a particular way or by restricting her freedom to roam or enjoy life. In-fact I think we are already running late at it but then I also believe on the saying ‘better late than never’.

So at the end all I can say is I will do my share to stop this but will you..???
