Daughter Of The East

. . 1 comment:
I recently read "Daughter Of The East - An Autobiography of Benazir Bhutto." An amazing tale of a very tough lady and a fighter. But what held my interest in the book is the conception about certain things in life that she conveyed so well through the right words which really touched my heart and greatly influenced my thought process towards life and society. Some of my favorite wise quotes from this book are -

1. "It was men's interpretation of our religion that restricted women's opportunities , not our religion itself."

2." 'Adjusted' is not the right word. I cannot adjust to a situation which is abhorrent. To adjust is to give in. I have coped."

3."Tyranny, like hell , is not easily conquered ; yet we have this consolation with us , that the harder the conflict , the more glorious the triumph."

4. "Visions can be dreams. Or they can be predictions."

5." We didn't really love each other yet, though my mother assured me that love would come later. Instead there was a mental commitment between us , a realisation that we were accepting each other as husband and wife totally and forever. In a way , I realised , that bond was stronger than love."

6."This was my goal yesterday , this is the dream I share with you , and this will remain our unwavering commitment forever."

7."You can't be fuelled by bitterness. It can eat you up but it cannot drive you."

It's not just the gripping life story of the only female prime minister Pakistan ever had but the tale of devotion of a beautiful and charismatic woman towards her family , her religion , her country and the rights of people of her country whom she immensely loved. Bhutto made the coexistence of Islam and Democracy possible which is till date considered impossible in a country like Pakistan and is a topic of much heated debate all over the world.
