Friendship day is a day on which we celebrate the most important relationship in our life which is friendship. The first International Friendship day was announced by General Assembly of United Nations on 30 July 1958. However we Indians celebrate Happy Friendship day on first Sunday of month August, which means Friendship day 2014 in India is on 3rd August,2014.

 

History of Friendship Day:

Friendship Day was originally promoted by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark cards in 1930, intended to be 2 August and a day when people celebrated their friendships by sending cards. You will be surprised to know that it was celebrated in United States at the time of official announcement of Congress. After that United Nations joined this event and slowly it spread all over globe. In 1998, Nane Annan, wife of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, named Winnie the Pooh as the world’s Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations. The event was co-sponsored by the U.N. Department of Public Information and Disney Enterprises, and was co-hosted by Kathy Lee Gifford. Among all countries in Asia, Friendship day is most popular in India. On friendship day, there is public holidays in schools and government offices. People gather in small or large groups and celebrate this day by having drinks, lunch or dinner together. Friends acknowledge each other by giving cards and gifts.
